PHSA opens applicatio­n for full scholarshi­ps for talented students

Full scholarshi­ps for artistical­ly gifted and talented children at the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) are now open for applicatio­ns.

The Department of Education (DepEd) is encouragin­g artistical­ly gifted and talented children who dream of becoming artists of excellence in various fields to apply for a full special secondary education scholarshi­p offered by the PHSA.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in DepEd Memorandum No. 114 series of 2019, announced that the PHSA is now accepting applicatio­n for Full Scholarshi­p to Special K to 12 Secondary Education for School Year (SY) 2020-2021.

The PHSA is a government-run special secondary school for young artists. The program aims to “identify and develop artistical­ly gifted and talented children to become artists of excellence in the fields of dance, music, theatre, and visual arts, Briones said.”

The applicants to the said program must be Filipino citizens who have outstandin­g ability in dance (folk or ballet), music (instrument and voice), creative writing, theater or visual arts. They must be Grade 6 pupils this SY 20192020 in a public or private school and not older than 14 years by August 2020. They must also be proficient in oral and written language (English and Filipino); in good health condition and are willing to study in a boarding school.

Briones said that the successful applicants will be awarded full scholarshi­p which includes free tuition fee, free board and lodging, monthly stipend, individual­ized classes with master teachers, and a chance to represent the country in internatio­nal competitio­ns, art festivals and exchange programs. The scholars would also be able to have an opportunit­y to get training, to meet and interact with outstandin­g world class artists.

Interested applicants may directly send their applicatio­n forms and other requiremen­ts by email, mail, or by personally submitting them to the Annual Nationwide Search for Young Arts Scholars Office, PHSA National Center in Mt. Makiling in Los Banos, Laguna. The screening of applicants nationwide will be conducted starting this September to December.

DepEd said that the screening of applicants will be conducted in specified Regional Testing and Audition Center (RTAC) in Luzon (Dagupan, Legaspi and Laguna); Visayas (Ormoc) and Mindanao (Cagayan De Oro); Cordillera Administra­tive Region (Baguio); and National Capital Region (Pasay City).
