Flood-control structure along Nangka River in Marikina reaches 91% completion – Villar
The flood-control structure along Nangka River in Marikina City is now on its final stages of construction and already “substantially completed,” the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) recently announced.
The structure built along the river in Barangay Fortune in Marikina City is already 91 percent finished, DPWH-National Capital Region Director Ador Canlas said, noting that it is expected to be fully-completed ahead of its target completion set on April 2020.
A total fund of ₱45 million was allocated to implement the project which involves the replacement of ripraps and construction of concrete gravity walls.
It is funded under the 2019 General Appropriations Act (GAA) and implemented by the DPWH Metro Manila I District Engineering Office.
Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said that since the stretch of Nangka River traverses a number of communities in San Mateo, Rizal and Marikina, “the department is implementing more flood mitigation projects along the river to ensure the protection of residents affected during strong typhoons.”
“As one of the cities that are gravely flooded during strong typhoons, the Marikina government usually instructs residents in low-lying areas to evacuate. The department hopes to provide aid on this problem by continuously seeking effective flood mitigation initiatives,” Villar added.
