Chito Miranda, celebs discover and denounce poser accounts

- By REGINA MAE PARUNGAO

Chito Miranda has set the record straight: He is not the owner of a Twitter account with the handle @ itsmechito_.

He made the clarification after receiving messages from his followers, asking about the account’s legitimacy.

“Again, this is not me at wala akong kinalaman sa account na ’yan,” he wrote.

The thing is, the 43year-old frontman of Parokya ni Edgar revealed that Twitter account even blocked him.

“He (or she) is just pretending to be me. Naka-block nga ako sa account na ’yan eh,” he said.

Chito is not the first celebrity to have been victimized by posers.

Suffering the same fate over the past years were Bea Alonzo, Angel Locsin, Pokwang, Angelica Panganiban, Maja Salvador, and Kim Chiu, among others.

“May mga fake accounts sa Twitter, hindi mawawala iyon. Mga fans din sila na siguro sa sobrang ina-idolize ka, akala nila okay lang na gamitin picture mo pati pangalan mo,” Angel said back

then.

Although Twitter itself immediately cancels accounts that are confirmed to be fake, the Cyber Crimes Division of the National Bureau of Investigation said posers can still be held liable for their actions.

Twitter set guidelines on how to report impersonation account.

“Impersonation is a violation of the Twitter Rules. Twitter accounts portraying another person in a confusing or deceptive manner may be permanently suspended under the Twitter impersonation policy,” it read.

Anyone can report an account for impersonation directly from that account’s profile.

Note that one does not need a Twitter account to report impersonation on Twitter.

Upon receipt of an impersonation report, the microblogging site will investigate the reported accounts to determine if the accounts are in violation of the Twitter Rules. “Accounts determined to be in violation of our impersonation policy, or those not in compliance with our parody, commentary, and fan account policy, will either be suspended or asked to update the account(s) so they no longer violate our policies,” Twitter guidelines read.
