75th liberation and 26th cityhood anniversaries of Mandaluyong

-

Today marks the 75th year of Mandaluyong City’s liberation from the Japanese in 1945. Coinciding with its diamond anniversary is its 26th cityhood anniversary. Republic Act No. 7675, which was signed on February 9, 1994, converted the Municipality of Mandaluyong into a Highly Urbanized City. Various activities are usually held to mark the dual celebration. They include a beauty pageant, a job fair, a medical mission, awarding of outstanding citizens and top taxpayers, a grand civic and military parade, a band concert, a dance sports competition, a fun run, an inter-high school quiz bee, oratorical and declamation contests, and a fluvial parade. However, due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, the city government postponed some of its major activities scheduled today to avoid the possible spread of the disease due to the many people expected to attend the events.

Mandaluyong City lies at the heart of Metropolitan Manila. There are different accounts as to the origin of the name Mandaluyong. One claims that the place had an abundance of luyong, a kind of tree whose wood was used to produce beautiful canes and home furniture. Another tells of how the Spaniards named the place based on a navigator’s report of rolling hills that were frequently lashed by daluyong (big waves from the sea). Still, another source tells of locals describing their place as madaluyong (experiencing frequent surges). Regardless of the origin of its name, Mandaluyong has risen from its humble beginnings to become the highly urbanized center that is referred to as the “Tiger City of the Philippines.”

It is believed that the remarkable rate of development in the early 1980s contributed in transforming the city into one of the most progressive economic centers in the country. The events that followed the 1986 EDSA Revolution ushered in a new beginning for the municipality.

Mandaluyong today is one of the most promising business and financial centers in the metropolis. Many of its infrastructures are owned and managed by the most famous tycoons in the country.

We greet the residents and government of the City of Mandaluyong on the occasion of their 26th Cityhood Anniversary and 75th Liberation Day.
