Barbershops, salons to offer more services

- By GENALYN D. KABILING

Barbershops and salons may increase operational capacity and offer services other than basic hair cutting in relaxed community quarantine areas based on updated guidelines issued by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

The government has allowed barbershops and salons in general community quarantine (GCQ) areas to raise their operations to 50 percent capacity from 30 percent subject to health protocols beginning July 16. Those businesses located in modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) are allowed to boost capacity operations to 75 per

cent from 50 percent.

“Kinakailangan pa rin sundin ang physical distancing at prescribed minimum health protocols (They must still follow physical distancing and prescribed minimum health protocols),” Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said during a televised Palace press briefing, in announcing the latest guidelines for barbershop and salon operations.

In GCQ areas, Roque said all haircutting services and hair treatment services of barbershops and salons may resume.

More salon services, on the other hand, will be allowed in establishments located in MGCQ areas. Barbershops and salons can offer all haircutting services, hair treatment, nail care services, basic facial care (make-up, eyebrow threading, eyelash extension, and facial massage) and basic personal care services (waxing, treading, shaving, foot spa and hand spa). These services will be subjected to strict protocols on hand sanitation, face mask and face shields, gloves and sterilized equipment.

Based on the DTI guidelines, Roque said barbershops and salons must follow other mandatory health standards such as no face mask/no entry policy and provision of rubbing alcohol.

He said these businesses must likewise register with SafePass or stayfe.ph or administer health declaration checklist for contact tracing.

There must be thermal scanning prior to entry to the barbershops. Those with temperature higher than 37.5°C must not be allowed to enter the barbershops and salons. People with symptoms of colds, cough and or difficulty breathing must also be denied entry.

The barbershops and salons must also ensure one-meter distance between chairs that will be occupied.

Other health protocols are proper ventilation and exhaust system in the establishments, sanitation of restrooms, and sterilization of equipment or tools and workstation before and after each use. Companions of customers must not be allowed entry unless absolutely necessary.
