Pacquiao to Marquez: Let’s fight corruption

- By CARLO ANOLIN

Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has extended support to his rival-turned-friend Juan Manuel Marquez as the latter announced his candidacy for Mexican Congress.

"I am humbled that you (Marquez) have taken notice of my work in the Philippines. Let us be partners in our fight against corruption. Remember always politics is not a business, it is public service," wrote the 42-year-old Pacquiao, also the president of political party PDP-Laban, on Twitter.

"Wish you the best, my friend. Vaya con Diyos!"

Marquez earlier cited Pacquiao, a senator in the Philippines, for his inspiration in shifting from boxing to politics in his beloved homeland.

Marquez, 47, banners the Ecological Green Party of Mexico ticket for the Chamber of Deputies as a representative for the Mexico City borough of Gustavo A. Madero.

A former four-division world boxing champion, Marquez has vowed to "deliver a knockout to corruption" in Mexico.

One of his open platforms is to focus on the promotion of sports for the youth by installing more boxing gyms as Mexico is known as one of the countries that produces world-class boxers.

Pacquiao, for his part, was elected twice in the House of Representatives representing Sarangani province before becoming a senator in 2016.
