A Drive thru innovation

-

This special issue is a collaboration between the Technology and Motoring sections of the Manila Bulletin. Here we will talk about how technology has changed transportation and made it more convenient and safer for drivers and passengers alike. The innovations in transportation are not just to make the vehicles go faster. Technological advancements also aim to give a better experience for passengers, safety for the drivers, and security to everyone.

If you’re looking for your next ride, here are the best brands that took advantage of what technology has to offer.

Ford

Ford has integrated so much technology in its Territory that it has become every tech guy’s dream to own one. You can control audio, air conditioning, ambient lighting, and settings efficiently like you’re controlling a hightech toy. If you’re inside the Ford Territory, you can stay powered up and connected by simply placing your compatible phone on the wireless charging pad. And, whatever the conditions outside, you can be comfortable. Just adjust the temperature of the front seats to keep you warm or cool. What would blow your mind is the Ford Co-Pilot360 technology in the Titanium edition of the Territory. The intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop and go feature slows down if the traffic ahead has stopped or slowed down, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop before resuming as traffic begins to move. Previously the technology required driver reactivation when the car stopped for three seconds. The advancement now is that it would continue driving if stopped for up to 30 seconds. Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control also includes Speed Sign Recognition, where it reads the speed limit on signage and adjusts accordingly.

Isuzu

Isuzu recently introduced the all-new and improved D-Max that features an array of advanced technology that combines convenience and functionality to make the driver’s and passenger’s ride experience more enjoyable and safer. The Apple Carplay and Android Auto allow the driver to play music, navigate, answer phone calls and text messages – all while being hands-free. If you’re driving, you can use your voice to ask for directions or switch to a new radio station while your hands are on the steering wheel and your eyes are on the road. Every Isuzu D-Max includes a network of technological features that operate automatically and independently for a safer and more convenient ride: Intelligent Driver Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Auto Headlights, Rain Sensing Automatic Wiper, and UV Glass. These tech features that work under the hood to make me concentrate on the road would make me decide to get the D-MAX.

Suzuki

Suzuki reintroduced the iconic Vitara with a new body embedded with technology that tech and non-tech enthusiasts would surely love. The electric power assistance for the steering, cruise control and speed limiter, electric windows front and rear, and the seven-inch touchscreen display with voice actuated audio navigation system, smartphone connectivity, hands-free connectivity, and reversing camera. Other features that would make your life more convenient include electrically adjustable door mirrors, an onboard computer that monitors outside air temperature, a digital clock, a gear lever indicator, an instant, and average fuel consumption readout, and an ALLGRIP indicator (on 4WD models). There is also an extra cabin light in the front footwells, center lower stowage box, and vanity mirrors.

Mitsubishi

Mitsubishi has brought the Outlander PHEV, a plugin hybrid, into the country. The Outlander PHEV has a 13.8 kWh capacity battery and a 2.4-liter gasoline engine that enables it to travel further than other electric vehicles. Techies would love charging the Outlander PHEV as it’s just like charging a phone. It connects to a standard wall socket. Just plug in, charge, and go. It runs around 55 kilometers using the pure electric mode that would make your running cost considerably lower. In terms of safety, it uses a radar to keep a safe distance to the vehicle in front. If the vehicle in front is too close, slowing down or stopping, the ACC will automatically slow or stop the Outlander PHEV. With a combination of cameras and laser radar, the forward collision mitigation system or FCMS System will decide the distance and speed compared to the vehicle in front of you. If the system detects a danger of collision, it sounds a warning and automatically slows down. Other tech features that would ensure the safety of the driver, passengers, and even pedestrians include lane departure warning, which warns the driver when the vehicle drifts away from the lane, automatic high beam that switches the beam when oncoming vehicles are detected, and reverse crosstraffic alert that warns the driver if the rear bumper sensor detects and approaching vehicles when reversing.

Toyota

Toyota Motor Philippines has launched the refreshed Innova. It is now coming with new tech features and innovations to make your drive more accessible and safer. The new Innova is called the MPV with everything you need. The top-spec V variant features a keyless entry system with push-to-start ignition, speed-sensing door locks, automatic climate control, and a reversing camera with parking sensors. Toyota is also bringing more convenience to clients by introducing the new myToyota app to replace the existing app, which will no longer be accessible soon. Toyota owners could now get maintenance reminders, inquire for vehicle upgrades and update insurance information. You can also download the app if you’re still planning to buy a Toyota vehicle. Using the app, you can check for available models, accessories, and promos.

Take your pick. But, whether it’s Ford, Isuzu, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, or Toyota, there’s one thing that we could assure you. You could never get lost as these brands have fully integrated technology for your convenience and safety in their vehicles.
