The Distinguished

An all-Thomasian atelier exhibition

- By ABE OROBIA

Not just a showcase of exceptional skills and celebration of creative intellects, this exhibition is an exposition of generational talents gathered together to deliver and give back to their alma mater, the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

The Thomasian artists included in the lineup are not only objectively extra-ordinary; but, are importantly inĹuential in the artistic community, be it be painting, printmaking, or sculpture as their mode of expression, and in terms of style doing ĸgurative or nonrepresentational that they opt to conceive. Their rise to fame from being an upcoming artists to the present is an attestation of continued outpouring passion to sustain relevance in which their successes serve as inspiration to many.

This exhibition titled “The Distinguished” is presented in virtue of the university by the UST Atelier Alumni Association, the mother alumni of the school under the tutelage of Marissa Pe. It is in partnership with the Office for Alumni Relations (UST OAR) and the Atelier Alumni Association Inc. (UST-AAAI).

The participating master artists are the following in alphabetical order: Angelito Antonio, Antonio Austria, Tam Austria, Andres Barrioquinto, Rosario Bitanga, Remy Boquiren, Joe Datuin, Fil Delacruz, India Dela Cruz, Anita del Rosario, Edgar Doctor, Jess

Flores, Raul Isidro, Willy Layug, Derrick Macutay, Nemi Miranda, Justin Nuyda and Ramon Orlina.

The selection process started in 2018 to this year to come up with a highly qualiĸed roster of illustrious and celebrated artists. It has undergone a stringent panel of screening committee from the university and those chosen are deemed worthy to be an honoree of the Distinguished Thomasian Alumni Award. The noble endeavor is on the progression of the art and design industry in the country and beyond to create a blueprint for everyone with the same passion to follow.

To write only a fraction of the numerous contributions and accomplishments of this magnificent roster is indeed insufficient. Nevertheless, the exhibit invites viewers to appreciate, study, reflect and find meaning, in the metaphors and the natures imbued into these masterpieces.

Education and learning are easily accessible nowadays while advancement in technology can be contributory to success from which one can claim, “Am I much better than them?”

As an educator myself, I can say that this assertion could be both fair and unkind because one thing we cannot deduct from these bestowed artists, their distinct discipline, hard work, dedication, and determination.

As the art world is continuously evolving, innovating, and becoming competitive, it becomes a marathon of sorts; but values should remain. These intangibles are engraved and reĹected in the works of these masters we should emulate as they are testaments and yardsticks of longevity and success in the industry.

“The Distinguished” (All Thomasian Atelier Exhibition) runs until May 12, 2022, at the ArtistSpace, Ground level, Ayala Museum Annex. Makati Avenue corner, Dela Rosa Street Greenbelt Park, Makati City. The artist talk and reception are on April 30, 2022.
