Teachers to receive honoraria for election duty on time

- By JEL SANTOS

Teachers who served in the electoral boards (EBs) will get their honoraria within 15 days from Election Day, May 9.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) acting spokesman John Rex C. Laudiangco assured this on Thursday, May 12.

Citing the Electoral Service Reform Act, Laudiangco said the Comelec is obliged to pay members of the EBs within 15 days from Election Day.

“Sisiguraduhin po ng Comelec na mabibigay po ito sa kanila within the time frame allowed by law (The Comelec will make sure this will be given to them within the time frame allowed by law),” he said during a press briefing.

“Absolute po iyan, wala pong excuses. Gagawin po namin iyan (That’s absolute, there are no excuses. We will make it happen).”

Additional honoraria?

Meanwhile, Laudiangco said the Comelec has yet to decide if teachers who served beyond the usual period of rendering election services will get additional honoraria.

“There is no resolution yet approved and promulgated. It was a statement from me having remembered that there was a similar instance in the 2019 NLE (National and Local Elections),” he said.

“Please allow me to clarify po, that if ever this would be decided on, this would not be the first time that this was done, given, as I’ve stated a similar instance in 2019,” the acting spokesman added.

The Comelec raised the honoraria of chairperson of electoral boards from ₱8,000 to ₱10,000; and of members of the electoral boards from ₱6,000 to ₱8,000.

In April, the poll body said it tried to appeal to the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) not to deduct income tax from the honoraria of teachers who served in the EBs.
