Various maintenance and repair group (MRG) tools and tactical items were donated to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) by the United States’ Department of State through its Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) on Monday, Aug. 22.

The donations were personally handed over by US Ambassador to the Philippines Mary Kay Loss Carlson to the PCG led by Vice Adm. Eduardo Fabricante, deputy commandant for operations, at the PCG Fleet headquarters at Pier 13, South Harbor in Port Area, Manila.

The turnover ceremony coincided with the 15th founding anniversary of the PCG Fleet.

In his speech, Fabricante said the MRG tools can be used by the

PCG to strengthen its capabilities in maintaining its floating assets and other facilities.

Among the donated tactical items are waterproof digital cameras, 7x50 mm porro prism binoculars, handheld VHF [very high frequency] radios, and military-style individual first aid kits.

“This is an additional effort to the growing and expanding capabilities of the Command, which aims to improve the qualities of its maintenance and training as well as the sustainability and efficiency of tactical operations of our personnel and assets afloat and ashore,” Fabricante said.

He noted that the PCG will use the donated items during maritime operations such as maritime law enforcement, maritime security, maritime safety, maritime research and rescue, and marine environmental protection within the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

Fabricante also expressed gratitude to the US government for “consistently supporting the PCG’s growth through education, training, and provision of needed assets and equipment.”

“We are always grateful for the generosity and kindness being shown to us by our counterparts, which in turn assist us in fulfilling our mandates,” he added.

Meanwhile, US Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Midgett (WMSL757) will visit Manila next week for a program of in-port and atsea events, according to Carlson.
