Mueller extends with Bayern

MUNICH (AFP) -- Veteran Bayern Munich attacker Thomas Mueller has extended his deal by one year to 2025, the Bavarian club announced on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

"I'm happy my journey at FC Bayern is continuing. I want to play my part in us remaining successful, both as a team and the whole club," Mueller said in a statement.

Mueller's contract was set to expire at the end of this season.

Calling Mueller "quality and reliability personified", Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund said the veteran was "a leader on and off the pitch, always a role model and incredibly valuable for the entire team".

Despite wearing the captain's armband several times this season, the 34-year-old has received less game time under coach Thomas Tuchel, enjoying just five league starts.

Mueller has become synonymous with the Bavarian giants and has been at Bayern for more than two decades, having joined as a 10-yearold in 2000 from village club TSV Paehl, located just 50 kilometers from Munich.

A two-time Champions League winner, Mueller has won 12 Bundesliga titles with Bayern in a career spanning 684 games, scoring 237 goals and providing 261 assists.

Only former Bayern goalkeeper Sepp Maier has played more games for the club and only Gerd Mueller, with 568, and Robert Lewandowski, with 344, have more goals for the club.

For Germany, Mueller was first called up in March of 2010, where he played in a 1-0 defeat to Argentina.

Since then, the attacker has played 126 games, scoring 45 times and winning the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Mueller was left out of the Germany squad after their group-stage exit at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, with many expecting his time with the four-time World Cup winners was over.

However, he was recalled in September, scoring a goal in a 2-1 win over France, and looks likely to play a role in next year's home European Championship under former Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann.

In November, Mueller's captain and long-time teammate Manuel Neuer, 37, also extended his deal by a season to 2025.

Jallen Herzchelle Agra of Claveria, Cagayan and Precious Eve Ferrer of Lingayen, Pangasinan toppled their respective rivals for a share of the lead after five rounds in the Queen of the North Chess Championship at the Ilocos Norte National High School gymnasium in Laoag, Ilocos Norte on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The second-seeded Agra outclassed fourth seed Shaniah Francine Tamayo of Laoag City in 23 moves of a Caro-kann defense while Ferrer toppled 12th seed Elizsa Gayle Cafirma of Bacarra, Ilocos Norte in 53 moves of a King’s Indian Defense to hike their respective tallies to 4.5 points.

The pair of wins kept Agra and Ferrer on course in their bids to clinch the title and the champion’s purse worth ₱60,000 courtesy of Mayor Michael Marcos Keon and Chairman of 102nd Homecoming UP Vanguard Incorporated (UPVI) Aldwin Galapon.

NEW YORK (AFP) -- Twotime major winner Angel Cabrera has been reinstated by the PGA Tour and over-50 PGA Tour Champions after serving a two-year prison sentence for gender violence, Golf Digest reported on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

The 54-year-old from Argentina, the 2007 US Open and 2009 Masters champion, was notified that his suspension had been immediately lifted in a Monday letter from PGA Tour senior vice president Andy Levinson that was obtained by Golf Digest.

"Failure to comply with the terms of your release from prison or any additional information regarding your legal situation in Argentina may result in the immediate reinstatement of your suspension," Levinson wrote, according to the report.

Cabrera was convicted in July 2021 in an Argentine court of assaulting, threatening and harassing his former partner between 2016 and 2018.

He was suspended by the PGA Tour after his conviction but was released from prison last August and played in an Argentine golf tournament last weekend.

Cabrera's only PGA Tour titles came at the two majors and the 2014 Greenbrier Classic, his most recent worldwide victory in a top-level tour event.
