LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 95% complete

- By KHRISCIELLE YALAO

The Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) said that the first phase of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension is nearing completion, with a progress rate of 95 percent for its civil and system works recorded as of the end of October.

Phase 1 is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2024.

On Tuesday, December 19, an initial test of the Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT1) Cavite Extension Phase 1 was conducted to ensure the station’s operability by next year.

The test was led by Alstom, the partner contractor of the LRMC Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC).

The test run included compatibility checks and assessment of interfaces between the train pantograph and overhead catenary system, train wheels and rail tracks, and train, platforms, and other viaduct trackside infrastructures.

They used second generation train sets (LRVS 1124-1126-1127-1121), which the company described as having the “widest car body” and are ideal for testing initial compatibility with station platforms, walkways, and cableways.

The trains were run on only a speed of up to 4.5 kilometers per hour (kph) for safety purposes.

The initial test was deemed a success by the LRMC, with President and Chief Executive Officer Juan F. Alfonso saying it was a “proud moment for us to see our train running along the extension line of LRT-1 from Redemptorist Station to Dr. Santos Station.”

“As we near the completion of this much-awaited railway project, the general public will begin to see more trains undergoing test runs and trial runs. These activities serve as a testament to the dedication and hard work of LRMC team, our contractors, and partners in making the LRT-1 Cavite Extension a reality,” he added.

Other train test runs will be conducted in the coming weeks using varied train sets and traveling at multiple speeds and differentiated load capacities.

“The LRT-1 Cavite Extension is now taking shape. We are confident that once this extension is operational, it will help in significantly improving the train system in our country providing a more efficient and reliable transportation option,” Alfonso said.

The 6.7-kilometer LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 begins from the existing LRT-1 Baclaran Station then traverses Redemptorist Station, MIA Station, Asiaworld Station, Ninoy Aquino Station, and Dr. Santos Station.

The five new stations under Phase 1 are in different stages of development.

From Dr. Santos Station, Phase 2 includes the construction of Las Pinas Station and Zapote Station. The final phase and last stop of the Cavite Extension is the Niog Station.
