- By MERLINA HERNANDO-MALIPOT

The Department of Education (Deped) has formally announced the opening of School Year (SY) 2024-2025 for basic education on July 29, 2024.

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte signed on Feb. 19 Deped Order No. 003, series of 2024, or the Amendment to Deped Order No. 22, series of 2023 (Implementing Guidelines on the School Calendar and Activities for the School Year 2023-2024).

In the newly released order, Deped announced the start and end of SY 2024-2025.

“SY 2024-2025 shall start on July 29, 2024, Monday, and end on May 16, 2025, Friday,” Deped said.

Deped noted that the adjustment in the school calendar for the incoming school year recognizes the clamor to gradually revert” the school calendar to the pre-pandemic opening of classes.

Under the same Deped order, SY 2023-2024, which was originally set to end on June 14, has been adjusted to May 31, 2024.

The same order also adjusted the End of School Year (EOSY) break for School Year 2023-2024 to June 1 to July 26, 2024. The EOSY was originally scheduled from June 17 to Aug. 25, 2024.

Due to this adjustment, Deped instructed schools to adjust their activities accordingly.

Deped instructed the School Awards Committee to “deliberate on awards and recognition not later than three calendar days” before the EOSY rites for learners who will receive recognition and awards and learners who are candidates for graduation.

It also adjusted the schedule for quarterly examinations.

The Third Quarter Examinations will be on March 25 to 26, while the Fourth Quarter Exam will be on May 16 to 17, 2024.

Deped encouraged schools to conduct their respective EOSY rites from May 29 to 31, 2024.

Duterte said the move is in line with the commitment of the department, as articulated in the MATATAG Agenda, to “take good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment.”

“This Department places the highest priority in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of learners and teachers,” Duterte said.
