A winter journey to Sapporo

Exploring the charms of Mount Moiwa and beyond

- Nickie Wang

MANILA’S heat is brutal. PAGASA says it’s because of easterly winds bringing scorching temperatures, with our city hitting a “prelude to hell” heat index.

Thinking about this hellish weather makes me want to escape to somewhere freezing. This reminds me of a book I read where the main character just thought about a cold place and bam, he instantly felt the chill of snowy weather.

Channeling the same escape, I’m recounting my experience in Sapporo, Japan, and its snowy charm.

The blockbuster film Kita Kita (2017), starring Alessandra de Rossi and Empoy Marquez, took us on a journey through Japan’s picturesque landscapes. It particularly captured the enchanting beauty of Sapporo, Hokkaido’s capital city.

After seeing the movie, I knew I had to visit Sapporo someday and tick Mount Moiwa’s Summit Observatory Deck off my bucket list. It was the setting for one of the movie’s most memorable scenes.

Inspired by the movie’s stunning visuals, I took a winter trip to Sapporo early this year. The trip, you guessed it right, kicked off at Mount Moiwa’s Summit Observatory Deck.

Fondly known as the “Lover’s Sanctuary,” Mount Moiwa’s Summit Observatory Deck sits majestically 531 meters above the city. This iconic spot offers panoramic views that are ideal for reliving cinematic moments like ringing the Bell of Happiness or immortalizing your love with a lock on the railings.

The ascent to Mount Moiwa is an adventure in itself. The scenic ropeway ride provides stunning vistas of Ishikari Bay, and halfway up, the transition to the whimsical Morris Car adds to the journey’s charm.

As twilight fell, the whole city came alive with lights. No wonder Sapporo is famous for its beautiful night views—it was even voted one of the best in Japan. The view from Mount Moiwa’s observatory is especially impressive, with all the city lights sparkling like jewels.

According to my knowledgeable guide, my chosen schedule for visiting the park (arriving around 4:00 p.m. after pickup) was perfect. The benefit? Fewer crowds, a view of the mountains during the mini cable car ride (with narration about the park), and the ideal timing to witness the sunset. Visitors can explore the park for two hours.

My local Klook tour guide took me to Asahiyama Memorial Park for a special view of Sapporo at night. This hidden gem, not as well-known by tourists, offers a fantastic panorama of the city lights because of its location surrounded by nature.

While Kita Kita paints Sapporo as a romantic destination, the city’s magic extends far beyond couples. Solo travelers will also be enchanted by Sapporo’s breathtaking views and rich history.

With my guide’s help, I discovered the most delicious ramen I’ve ever tasted after the tour. Sapporo’s culinary scene is a treasure trove waiting to be explored.

If your winter travels take you to Hokkaido, don’t miss the enchanting night views of Sapporo, especially from Mount Moiwa. Whether you’re seeking romance or a solo adventure, Sapporo’s captivating display of lights is sure to capture your heart.

To reach Mount Moiwa’s Summit Observatory Deck, take the ropeway from Moiwa Sanroku Station. Enjoy the stunning 1,200-meter journey with views of Ishikari Bay. Then, transfer to the Mo-risu Car for a unique ride through the forest to the summit.

Sapporo, with its picturesque landscapes and welcoming charm, is a treasure waiting to be discovered. You can also discover Sapporo’s splendor by booking a tour on Klook.
