PUERTO PRINCESA TAKES PRIDE IN HOSTING WORLD DRAGONBOAT

PUERTO Princesa City is poised to become the epicenter of global dragon boat racing, as the Philippine­s prepares to host the Internatio­nal Canoe Federation Dragon Boat World Championsh­ips from October 28 to November 4.

This momentous event promises to showcase the thrilling competitio­n and unparallel­ed beauty of this renowned beach destinatio­n.

Puerto Princesa Mayor Lucilo Rodriguez Bayron expressed his gratitude for the opportunit­y, recognizin­g it as a signi cant milestone for the city.

“Hosting an event of this magnitude is an honor for Puerto Princesa. It presents us with a challenge that, once overcome, will pave the way for even greater endeavors in the future,” Mayor Bayron remarked.

Led by ICF President Thomas Konietzko, a delegation recently conducted a successful site visit, witnessing rsthand the preparatio­ns for what is anticipate­d to be the biggest sports spectacle in the Philippine­s this year.

During the visit, the delegation, which included ICF Dragon Boat Commission Chair Dr. Wai-Hung Luk, was deeply impressed by Puerto Princesa’s commitment to environmen­tal preservati­on.

“The Philippine­s is proud to host this event, aiming not only for a competitiv­e World Championsh­ips but also to provide participan­ts with a rich cultural and natural experience,” said Konietzko.

Leonora Escollante, President of the Philippine Canoe Kayak Dragonboat Federation (PCKDF), provided insights into the preparatio­ns, highlighti­ng the nation’s enthusiasm for hosting such prestigiou­s events.“It’s a challenge to bid for the hosting rights, but the Philippine­s’ beauty and the warm hospitalit­y of its people make it a preferred destinatio­n,” Escollante stated. Puerto Princesa, often dubbed“The City in a Forest,” is renowned for its awe-inspiring landscapes, encompassi­ng a wealth of natural, cultural, and historical treasures. Dr. Luk expressed confidence in the city’s ability to deliver an exceptiona­l championsh­ip experience.

“Puerto Princesa is poised to deliver a superb ICF Dragon Boat World Championsh­ips. It’s an event not to be missed, promising unforgetta­ble memories for all participan­ts,” he a rmed.

As the o cial national sport associatio­n for water paddle sports in the Philippine­s, recognized by the ICF, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and the Internatio­nal Olympic Committee, the PCKF is committed to ensuring the success of the championsh­ips. Medals will be awarded in open, women, and mixed events across several age categories and distances.

Anticipate­d to draw thousands of paddlers from around the world, the week-long event also serves as a quali er for the World Games in Chengdu, China, scheduled for August 9-10, 2025. Puerto Princesa stands ready to welcome participan­ts and spectators alike to this extraordin­ary celebratio­n of athleticis­m and camaraderi­e.
