WELCOME to the Future, the boxing event featuring the main event fight between Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire and Puerto Rican former titlist Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas for the WBO junior featherwei­ght title will be aired by ABS- CBN on February 5, Sunday at 10: 15 a. m. The co- main event, also a title fight, will be a battle between Mexican sluggers Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and first- ranked challenger Marco Antonio Rubio. A primetime telecast of the bouts will air on Studio 23 at 6: 00 p. m.

ANGELICUM AXES COLEGIO SAN AGUSTIN IN SHAKEY’S GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

ANGELICUM College (ANC) rode on a scrambling second-set victory to repulse Colegio San Agustin (CSA) in three and join three others in the early lead in the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League NCR leg at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City last Sunday. The ANC tossers fought back from a set down to sweep the next two and pull off a 20-25, 29-27, 25-18 win over their CSA rivals in Pool B in the opener of one of the eight regional tournament­s culminatin­g in the Tournament of Champions next month in Davao City.

LETRAN ROUTS JRU IN NCAA MEN’S LAWN TENNIS

DEFENDING champion Letran College snared its sixth straight win after bagging an easy 3- 0 victory over Jose Rizal University on Tuesday in the National Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n men’s lawn tennis tournament at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Adriatico, Manila. But it was San Sebastian College which pulled off the biggest surprise for the day after beating San Beda, 2- 1, in the other featured match. The Stags thus improved to 5- 1 in a tie with the College of St. Benilde Blazers, while the Red Lions dropped to third at 5- 2.

PHILIPPINE SWIMMERS INVITED TO JOIN OLYMPIC PRE-QUALIFYING EVENT

AN elite group of young swimmers based in the central Philippine province of Aklan has been invited to join a pre-qualifying event for the Summer Olympics. Edwin Chong, secretary general of the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia, has invited the Aklan Aquablades to join the 48th MILO/PRAM Malaysia National Age Group Swimming Championsh­ip. The tournament will be held in Kuala Lumpur on April 6-8. Members of the Aquablades team said Wednesday that they’re yet to decide if they want to attend the swimming tournament owing to some financial concerns. Chong said the Federation Internatio­nale de Natation (FINA) has approved the Malaysia competitio­n as a pre-qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics. FINA is recognized by the Internatio­nal Olympic Committee (IOC) for administer­ing internatio­nal competitio­n in aquatic sports.

FRENCH OPEN AND OLYMPICS TOP FOR DJOKOVIC

BELGRADE: Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic said Tuesday that his main focus this year would be on the Olympic Games and the French Open, a Grand Slam win that would see him hold all four major titles at once. The French Open was the only Grand Slam that Djokovic failed to win last season as he went as far as the semifinals for the third time. The 24- year- old will also focus on the Olympic Games saying they are “the most prestigiou­s events in the history of sports.”
