- EDWIN ROLLON

FORMER Asian champion Frankie Miñoza and one- time Philippine Open tilist Angelo Que will lead the Filipinos’ campaign in the Zaykabar Myanmar Open – the maiden event of the rich Asian Tour that will tee off today at the Royal Mingalardom Golf and Country Club in Myanmar.

Miñoza, 53, is aiming to bag the distinction of becoming the oldest champion in the APT history while Que is keen on ending a long title drought. Last year’s Tour money champion Juvic Pagunsan opted to skip the event to test his mettle against the world best players that includes US Open champion Rory Mcilroy of Ireland in the Dubai Desert Classic on February 9.

“It’s nice to start the year knowing that everybody’s eyes are on Filipino players since Juvic (Pagunsan) dominated the money list last year. It’s a long way to go but with the caliber of our players there’s a big chance that we can win back- to- back money title,” said Miñoza, who is gunning to break the record of Choi Sang- ho of Korea who won the 2005 Maekyung Open at the age of 50 years and 145 days.

The other Filipino golfers in the event are Mars Pucay, Jay Bayron, Jhonnel Ababa, and teen sensation Miguel Tabuena. They will be up against highly rated Asian rivals headed by defending champion Tetsuji Hiratsuka of Japan, Baek Seukhyun of South Korea) and Kiradech Aphibarnnat and Boonchu Runagkit of Thailand.
