QC Trowel Club inducts officers

RW. Santiago Gabonza was named guest of honor, speaker and inducting officer in the 6 p. m. February 7 QC Trowel Club’s 3rd induction of officers at the Hotel Rembrandt in Quezon City.

President Tony D. Ong leads the Club officers to be sworn into office, including internal affairs vice president Noel S. Ferrer; external affairs vice president Cesar Cabral; secretary Dario T. Añasco Jr. and asst. secretary Arnulfo Macatangay; treasurer Bonifacio Alaiza and asst. treasurer Elmer Sagatsat; auditor Voltaire Padilla and asst. auditor Lenie Allen Sampayan; PROS, Victor Ong and Elpidio de Chavez; chaplain Benjamin D. PAY SOUGHT FOR JAILED NEWSMAN

THE United Nations Human Rights Committee ( UNHRC) wants the Philippine government to compensate a Davao City- based journalist who has been imprisoned for criminal defamation. The UNHRC believes that the imprisonme­nt of Alexander Adonis violated his right to free expression, according to an internatio­nal media rights group. The case stemmed from a 2001 radio broadcast in which Adonis reported on an alleged affair between then House Speaker Prospero Nograles and a married woman, the Internatio­nal Press Institute ( IPI) said on Friday. The UNHRC said the nearly 5- year prison sentence imposed on Adonis was “incompatib­le” with Article 19 of the Universal Declaratio­n of Human Rights. The committee reported that Nograles filed a libel complaint against Adonis in response to the story.

SEX RING BUSTED, 13 WORKERS RESCUED

THE Criminal Investigat­ion and Detection Group ( CIDG) and the Justice Department’s Inter- Agency Council Against Traffickin­g ( IACAT) is hot on a trail of a certain “Nikki” who runs a Laguna- based escort service ring following an antihuman traffickin­g operations in Biñan that resulted in the rescue of 13 sex workers including two minors. CIDG chief, Police Director Samuel D Pagdilao Jr. said elements of the CIDG’S Women and Children Protection Division ( WCPD) led by Police Superinten­dent Emma Libunao and the IACAT launched an entrapment operation at Frezco Resort located at Almamanso St., San Antonio, Biñan, Laguna
