Miriam College, San Beda, RTU bag WNCAA crowns

Miriam College and Rizal Technologi­cal University (RTU) ran away with three crowns each while San Beda College Alabang bagged two titles in the recent four- event sportsfest of the 42nd Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n (WNCAA) held at the San Beda College Alabang grounds.

Miriam retained its midgets and juniors taekwondo titles and unseated De La Salle Zobel in midgets badminton to up its total season haul to four championsh­ips, including the junior volleyball plum last year.

RTU remained seniors champion in table tennis and taekwondo and ruled swimming to add to its earlier wins in senior volleyball and senior futsal. San Beda likewise kept its midgets and seniors swimming crowns.

In other results, La Salle Antipolo defended its juniors badminton title while Philippine Women’s University topped the seniors division and St. Stephen’s High School wrested the junior table tennis title from La Salle Antipolo.

Host Centro Escolar University had earlier topped senior basketball.

Named Most Valuable Players were Mikaela Francine Vargas of Miriam, Ali Candelaria of La Salle and Jessamine Quennie Dinio of PWU (badminton); Richanda Ching of SSHS and Denelyn Dionio of RTU ( table tennis); Clare Gascon and Francine Pauline Alarilla of Miriam and Dyan Paglinawan of RTU (taekwondo); while topping their respective divisions in swimming were Katrina Mae Garcia of San Beda (midgets), Catherine Bondad of San Beda ( juniors) and Edzen Faye Dinglasan of CEU (seniors).

Up next for the country’s first and only tri-level league for women is the Naga City National Games on February 16 to 20 while the junior and senior cheerleadi­ng competitio­n and closing rites are set on Feb. 26 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
