February 17, 1987 Opposition bets for Senate listed
LEADERS of seven opposition parties met at the Makati Sports Club to discuss the formation of a senatorial ticket to be presented by the United Opposition for the May 11 senatorial elections. This developed even as former Sen. Rene Espina resigned last night as secretary general of the United Nationalist Democratic Organization because of basic differences with other party leaders. The seven parties planning to draw up the unified ticket are the Nacionalista Party, Partido Nacionalista ng Pilipinas, Kilusang Bagong Lipunan, Liberal Party (Kalaw Wing), Mindanao Alliance, Social Democratic Party and the Unido (Espina block).
February 17, 1946 6,000 pier men refuse work, charged
MORE than 1,000 longshoremen picketed Malacañang to see President Sergio Osmeña and air charges that despite assurances of Gen. Wilhelm Styer and Labor Secretary Marcelo Adduru, more than 6,000 dock workers have not been readmitted. Col. “Pete” Grimm of Luzon Stevedoring Co. was charged by the strikers with allegedly refusing to reemploy the dock workers headed by Nicolas Cruz, and affiliated Union de Obreros Estivadores de Filipinas.
February 17, 1905 Escaped prisoner recaptured
DOMINGO SUTILO Y BUENVENTURA, one of the prisoners who escaped from Malabi prison by overpowering the guards on the launch Denver, has been recaptured and brought to Manila and will be sent back to Bilibid. He was taken in the Morong mountains by the constabulary. He stated that he became so tortured by hunger that he was compelled to eat his shirt. The entire absence of any such garment on his person seems to substantiate this part of his story.
