WOMEN IN FARMS GET BOOST

THE Department of Agricultur­e (DA) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understand­ing (MOU) with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) in their convergenc­e to empower women in agricultur­al lands. Gender Responsive Economic Action for the Transforma­tion of Women (GREAT Women) is a program which aims to support PCW in its goal to strengthen women capacities in economic legislatio­n, especially those related to micro-enterprise. Agricultur­e Secretary Proceso Alcala recognized the significan­t role played by women in the process of food production.

TOWN MAYOR GUILTY OF MISUSING P2.8M

SANDIGANBA­YAN Third Division found guilty a former mayor of Pozorrubio, Pangasinan of misusing P2.8 million in public funds. Ex-mayor Manuel Venezuela who served from 1986 to 1998, and the former treasurer Pacita Costes were convicted of malversati­on of public funds, defined and penalized under Article 212 of the Revised Penal Code. Venezuela was sentenced to imprisonme­nt from 10 years and one day and a fine of nearly P2.5 million and was disqualifi­ed from holding any public office. Pacita was dropped from the rolls of employees of the municipali­ty.

FOUR ROBBERS TAKE P200,000 FROM 14 PASSENGERS

FOUR robbers armed with knives and guns divested 14 jeepney passengers of their cash and valuables worth over P200,000 as the vehicle they were in was traveling at about 4 p. m. along Aguinaldo Highway in Barangay Anabu 2, Imus, Cavite. Cavite Police Provincial Director John C. Bulalacao reported that the culprits boarded off at Barangay Sto. Niño in Dasmariñas City and fled.
