THE REINVENTION OF ANGEL AQUINO

IN the entertainment industry where versatility is key, being able to adapt and reinvent oneself may even be more important as talent.

This may be the reason why Angel Aquino has become one of the most reliable and sought after personalities in showbiz. Not only does she possess one of the most beautiful faces and svelte figures in the industry, she has also established herself as model, host and actress.

Angel first made a name for herself as one of the hosts of the defunct shows F! and Us Girls, eventually transitioning into television and making a mark for her villainous portrayals in the ABSCBN drama series Magkaribal and Maria la Del Bario. She even received a Best Supporting Actress nomination from the Asian TV Awards for her role as Vera Cruz in Magkaribal. She has also starred in several notable movies, the most recent of which is the Cinemalaya entry Santa Niña with Coco Martin.

Now, Angel once again reinvents herself as she takes on the lead role in the forthcoming horror flick Amorosa: The Revenge. This marks Angel’s debut in the horror

film genre. Amorosa was another challenge for her creativity.

“It’s a different challenge, but that is also the reason why I enjoyed working on this movie,” she said. “Acting keeps me on my toes. With acting, you’re not so complacent, you’re always challenged to deliver what’s needed to be there,” she explained.

Angel says the movie is different from the usual horror films because it is also a psychological thriller and a family drama.

She takes on the role Rosa, a grieving mother of two boys, Amiel and Rommel, played by Martin del Rosario and Enrique Gil.

Following a vehicular accident that ripped her family apart, Rosa decides they need a fresh start, and she and her two sons decide to manage an old pension house.

Rosa hopes the change of scenery will bring them some much needed peace of mind, and heal the rift that formed between her and son Rommel after the accident. She also wants to be freed from hallucinations caused by the post-traumatic stress disorder she suffered from the accident.

However, Rosa soon realizes that her hallucinations are caused by a faceless ghost that haunts her every waking moment, who also visits here in her nightmares.

To save her family from the vengeful ghost she has to force herself to confront the truth about the accident— a truth she has been running from since the tragedy.

Amorosa is directed by Topel Lee who has made a name for himself in the horror genre, and also stars Empress, Ejay Falcon, Carlo Aquino, Xyriel Manabat, Jane Oineza, Franco Daza, Lloyd Samartino, Nico Antonio, Jairus Aquino, Richard Quan, Mosang and Nanding Josef. It is produced by Skylight Films, whose first outing was the thriller Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang.

Interior Motives

Apart from Amorosa, Angel also excitedly talked about a couple of her upcoming shows, one is the drama series Apoy sa Dagat, which also stars Angelica Panganiban, Piolo Pascual and Diether Ocampo, and is slated to air sometime in September or October.

Asked about her role, Angel says she will be feuding with Angelica over claims of entitlement and says she is looking forward to their “on screen-clashes.”

Angel also recently returned to hosting through the Lifestyle Network’s new show Interior Motives, which airs every Saturday night on SkyCable channel 52.

The program features Filipino interior designers, their works, and their perception on making use of space. As Angel interviews them, the audience will pick up tips and tricks in decorating their homes.

“I was quite unsure if they really wanted me because I didn’t know anything about interiors; I don’t have a background in interior design. But then I realized I am someone who appreciates these beautiful things— that is the strength that I can bring to the show. I love beautiful interiors,” Angel enthused.

Between hosting and acting, which is her priority? “Right now, mas gusto ko pang i- exhaust yung sarili ko as an actress. It’s very challenging kasi I want to challenge myself more.”

Amorosa will open in theaters nationwide on August 29.
