Cebu City dominates Batang Pinoy

TACLOBAN CITY: Cebu City upstaged every one as it captured 35 of the possible 36 gold medals in dancesport­s and came away with the most triumphs on Sunday at the close of the Philippine Oympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission Batang Pinoy 2012 Visayas leg.

Cebu City’s massive victories in dancesport­s held at Leyte National High School hiked its total harvest to 70 golds, 56 silvers and 54 bronzes.

Dancesport­s, like girls softball and weightlift­ing are held as national finals, while the rest of the sports played were qualifying for the National Finals.

The gold and silver medalists, like in the previous four legs held across the country, make it to the Iloilo City championsh­ips, slated on December 5 to 9.

Leyte province ended up winning 39 golds to go with its 26 silvers and 27 bronzes. Thirty two of the golds came from track and field where the hosts stunned traditiona­l athletics forces from Western and Central Visayas.

Bacolod City launched a more balanced attack and came in third with 32-22-20 tally. Fueled by its girls swim team led by Remselle Limaco and Kyla Isabelle Mabus who each snared six gold medals from the pool, Bacolod City picked up 17 victories in swimming, nine in athletics, four in

and two in table tennis. Also taking it the bulk of its winnings from the pool was Negros Occidental province, which wound up fourth overall with 28-13-13 tally. It bagged 17 golds in swimming.

Coming in fifth overall was Mandaue City, which picked up seven golds from boxing on the last day en route to winding up with a 16-5-9.

Aklan finished sixth with 14-1812, while Maasin City was seventh with 10-28-16.

Cebu City, long heralded as the region’s sporting might, also racked up triumphs in and with seven golds each, chess (6), (5) swimming (3) and athletics (3).
