13th Philippine Hobie Challenge starts Feb. 23
SOME seven countries will be seeing action in the 13th Philippine Hobie Challenge that begins on February 23 in Zambales and ends on March 1 in Anvaya Cove, Bataan.
Race organizer Monchu Garcia said that sailors from Australia, France, Italy, New Zealand, Taiwan and the United States have confirmed their participation in the seven- day race.
“The areas to be included in the whole race are Zambales, Subic, Nasugbu, Batangas, Calatagan, Anilao and Puerto Galera as well as the seas in the Palawan area,” said Garcia in a press conference on Thursday.
Roman Azanza of the Philippine Inter- Island National Sailing Foundation ( Phinsaf ), said that the competition would also help promote the country as a premier sailing destination in Asia.
“One of the major highlights of this year’s bout will pass through more of the country’s pristine blue and coral fringe seas and islands. The event will not just allow sailors to experience exciting offshore sailing but will also expose the beauty of the Philippines via sailing,” said Azanza.
Carla Kramer, another Phinsaf official said that the Hobie Challenge would also benefit the communities along its route.
“Every year, the Challenge raises donations of school supplies for local public schools. We are partnering with charitable foundations to donate solar- powered lights to help the families who do not have yet electricity,” Kramer said. FRANK CALAPRE
