NATIONAL MILO MARATHON DAVAO LEG MOVED TO NOVEMBER 6

- AFP

The Philta leadership row started when its former president Edwin Olivarez resigned on July 15, after being reelected Mayor of Parañaque in May.

Villanueva claimed that since he is the Philta vice- president for international affairs, he must replace Olivarez. But seven out of the 12 members of the board of trustees gathered and elected Andrada to be Philta’s new president on July 29.

POC legal counsel Ramon Malinao, in his letter to Cojuangco dated September 9, said that there is no legal impropriety or irregularity being committed in the election of Andrada and thus, recommended that POC recognize his ascent to the post. But, Villanueva disagreed and sought the help of Haggerty.

“The Philippines has so much potentials. Your country being the seventh largest in terms of population in Asia has enormous talents. The potential is unbelievable. You just need to have a strong tennis program,” Haggerty said. THE National MILO Marathon Davao qualifying race will be rescheduled to November 6, 2016, because of runners’ requests for an extension of the registration. The race was originally scheduled on October 9, 2016. The decision to extend the registration period was made in the best interest of the runners, and for the organizers to be able to create an unparalleled running experience for all participants. Onsite registration is extended until November 4, 2016 at Adidas, Gaisano Mall. For details contact 09215949303 and 09087376927.

HALEP KNOCKED DIZZY AT WUHAN OPEN

Simona Halep reached the Wuhan Open quarterfinals on Wednesday despite being knocked dizzy and forced to retire from a doubles match a day earlier. The Romanian world No.5 beat Yaroslava Shvedova 6-3, 6-3 before detailing the heavy blow from a ball which left her with bruising to her head. Halep was struck by a shot fired from the baseline by her doubles partner Jelena Ostapenko, before retiring from the match on Tuesday evening. “She hit me with the ball, like 150 kilometers (90 miles) per hour. I was dizzy in the first moment, but then was much better,” Halep said. Halep said she was cleared by doctors to play, and will meet American number nine Madison Keys in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Women’s Tennis Association doesn’t have the concussion protocols adopted by other sports to ensure players have fully recovered from blows to the head.

FRENCH FORMER OLYMPIC CHAMP SWAPS POOL FOR HANDBALL

PARIS: Former Olympic champion swimmer Florent Manaudou told Agence France- Presse on Tuesday ( Wednesday in Manila) that he is taking a break from the pool to concentrate on playing handball. The 50m freestyle gold medallist from London 2012 said in a statement he didn’t want to take “hasty or radical decisions” but wanted to avoid continuing his swimming career “without pleasure.” The 25- year- old will instead train with the Aixen- Provence handball team, although “without any ambition other than to give my best” and “find a different source of pleasure.” Manaudou is the brother of Athens 2004 Olympic women’s 400m freestyle champion Laure Manaudou, a major star in France who made a shock early retirement at just 22 in 2009. She made a comeback two years later but that lasted less than two years before she definitively left the sport in January 2013, aged 26. As well as winning Olympic gold, Florent Manaudou is a three- time world and six- time European champion.

ANTI- DOPING SYSTEM OPEN TO ABUSE, SAYS FROOME

LONDON: Tour de France champion Chris Froome has responded to the drug- taking controversy surrounding Bradley Wiggins by claiming sport’s anti- doping rules are open to abuse. Froome took to Twitter to vent about the issues with doping controls after two officially approved Therapeutic Use Exemptions ( TUE) earlier in his career were revealed by hackers earlier this month. Froome, who won his third Tour de France title in four years in July, said: “I take my position in sport very seriously and I know that I have to not only abide by the rules, but also go above and beyond that to set a good example both morally and ethically. It is clear that the TUE ( therapeutic use exemption) system is open to abuse and I believe that this is something the UCI ( cycling’s governing body) and WADA ( World Anti- Doping Agency) need to urgently address. Athletes are able to take some banned substances as medication if they are cleared by the authorities and Froome said he has never pushed the boundaries of what is allowed.

NIKE TURNS IN SOLID QUARTER AFTER OLYMPICS

NEW YORK: Global sports gear titan Nike reported solid revenue growth and beat analyst earnings forecasts for its fiscal first quarter Tuesday ( Wednesday in Manila), despite a cost surge tied to the Brazil Olympics. Nike reported revenues for the quarter ended August 31 up 7.7 percent from a year ago to $9.1 billion, around $200 million higher than expected. Earnings per share, bolstered by share buybacks, came in at 73 cents, compared to 67 cents a year ago and well past the 56 cents analysts had predicted. The company got some sales help from the Olympics, but also saw marketing costs rise significantly during the same period as it heavily promoted its brand during the Rio games.
