DAVAO, CEBU BETS SHINE IN BATANG PINOY

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte: Cebu City cagers notched back-to-back wins in the boys’ division while Davao City scored a three-peat in the girls’ category in the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Championsh­ips 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Friday at the Rotary Park Gym here.

Team captain Justine Jake Rosete, Beirn Anthony Laurente, Jim Paul Amistoso and Jearolan Omandac powered Cebu City’s 17-15 win over Zamboanga City in the finals.

Amistoso had six points, Laurente five, Omandac four while Rosete contribute­d two for Cebu.

Down by two in the last couple of minutes, Laurente scored a jumper in the two-point arch to tie the game at 12-all.

Omandac’s consecutiv­e lay- ups allowed them to grab the lead, 16- 14, then Amistoso split his charities to seal the victory for Cebu City.

Davao City, on the other hand, subdued Cebu City, 2016, to retain the crown.

The team, under coach Daniel Colango, was composed of Lee Dominique Sario, Roxanne Lara, Gypsy May Canuto and Patricia Jane Villarin.

Meanwhile, chess players Daniel Quizon and Kylen Joy Mordido of Dasmariñas, Cavite bagged two gold medals in the chess tournament held at the Bulwagang Panlalawig­an.

The 12-year-old Quizon prevailed in the boys’ 12under blitz and standard chess while the 14-year-old Mordido ruled the girls’ 13-17 class.

Quizon, a sixth grader at San Miguel Elementary School, shared the top spot with Clyde Harris Saraos of Jasaan, Misamis Oriental and Pasig City’s Mark Jay Bacojo that also tallied 5.5 points each.

But Quizon won via tiebreak in the sevenround Swiss system.

“I want to become a grandmaste­r someday. I just need to practice everyday and play with more experience­d players to be able to reach my dreams,” said Quizon who looks up to Asia’s first Grandmaste­r Eugene Torre and world champion GM Magnus Carlsen as his idols.

Mordido, a Grade 9 student from Dasmariñas National High School, was also in a two-way tie with Glybel Jane Quinanola of Cebu City after scoring 6.5 points apiece in round seven.

Like Quizon, Mordido took the gold via superior tiebreak points.

At the Tagum City Trade Center, Leyte’s Veronica Ompod (girls’ 40kg) and Rachel Claire Bais (girls’ 44kg) led her teammates to a harvest of gold medals in wrestling.

Their teammates that won gold were Andrea Rowella Abrea (girls’ 51kg), Marielle Jeanna Liwanag (58kg), Angela Alferez (62kg), Ronnel Nerzza (boys’ 35kg) and Francisco Arca (66kg).

Meanwhile, Lemuel Dalgo ( boys’ 53kg) and Anthonie John Tenollar ( boys’ 73kg) of Baguio City and Davao City’s Chino Sy ( boys’ 85kg) and Sydney Sy ( girls’ 62kg) also won gold in wrestling.

At the New Tagum City Hall, judokas Roxan Erica Norte (girls’ -32kg) and Cresphian Caliguid (boys’ -42kg) topped their weight classes as well as Hannah Mira of Muntinlupa (-36kg), Marvin Adrian Guevarra (boys’ -46kg), Agatha Lucero (girls’ -63kg), Shaira Arabejo (girls’ +36kg) and Sydney Sy (girls’ +70kg).

Asian Youth Weightlift­ing Championsh­ips silver medalist Ma. Dessa Delos Santos of Zamboanga City dominated the girls’ - 58kg weight class after lifting 70 kilograms in the snatch and 85 kgs. in the clean and jerk for a total of 155 kgs.

Quezon City’s Eriel Cardano topped the boys’ + 58kg with a total lift of 123 kgs., while John Kevin Padullo of Manila lifted a cumulative weight of 245 kgs. to rule the boys’ + 62kg event.

In sepak takraw,Davao City ruled the boys’ regu event followed by Mati City and Bacolod City.

In arnis, the national sport and martial art of the Philippine­s, Iloilo City won five golds, one silver and six bronze medals in several secondary anyo (form) events.

The wushu and gymnastics competitio­ns will be held from December 4 to 11 at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila.
