SINGLE PARENTS URGED TO REGISTER IN QC
QUEZON City Mayor Herbert Bautista has signed into law an ordinance which encourages solo parents in the city – male and female – to register with their respective barangay (village) to have access to information and avail themselves of the benefits provided under Republic Act 8927, known as the Solo Parents’ Welfare Act of 2000. The law provides that a solo parent can enjoy a flexible work schedule, parental leave of not more than seven days every year provided the solo parentemployee who has rendered at least one year of service; educational benefits for their children; housing benefits; livelihood programs and medical assistance. The city government has been sponsoring the enrollment of solo parents for medical care insurance under Philhealth. The Quezon City Social Services Development Department (SSDD), under Teresa Mariano, oversees the implementation of programs and services for solo parents. In 2016, the SSDD issued a total of 5,125 solo parent IDs that 4,935 are female.
CAINTA’S SECONDMOST WANTED FALLS
POLICE arrested the second most wanted person in Cainta, Rizal during an operation on Tuesday, identified by Supt. Elpidio Ramirez, officer- in- charge of Cainta police, as Benjie Revilla, alias Louie Montert. Revilla, who has pending warrant of arrest for murder, was arrested along PFCI Eastbank Road, Barangay San Andres, Cainta.
PAMPANGA PWDS GET ASSISTANCE
CITY of SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga: A total of 1,597 Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) from the different towns here recently received P3.9 million in financial assistance from the provincial government through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO). Each beneficiary, either an elementary or high school student or a child of parents with disabilities, was given P2,500 for their educational expenses and other needs. Gov. Lilia Pineda encouraged relatives of the PWDs to give more attention and tender loving care to their family members with disabilities as she promised to support their needs, particularly for education and livelihood. Pineda added that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan has approved a P13 million allotment for various financial and social services. The PSWDO also distributed wheelchairs, walkers and crutches to the beneficiaries.
ARMM HOLDS SOCIAL DEVT SUMMIT IN BASILAN
SHARIFF AGUAK, Maguindanao: The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) first Social Development Summit in Basilan on Tuesday resolved to address issues at the local level and promote greater inclusion of the community in the decision- making process. The summit brought together regional and local government officials including the governor, provincial board members, assemblymen, health officials, and teaching officials and their staff. ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman led the summit with vice- governor and concurrent Social Welfare and Development Secretary Haroun Alrashid Lucman Jr.; Health Depart- ment Secretary Kadil Jojo Sinolinding Jr. and Education Department Secretary John Magno. Discussed during the consultation were education, health, and livelihood. Problems with teachers’ appointments, promotions, lack of school buildings, the schools maintenance and other operating expenses, lack of health facilities and health services raised by the participants.
GUN-FOR-HIRE LEADER, 2 COHORTS SLAIN IN SHOOTOUT
THE leader of Bulacan’s most elusive and dreaded gun-for-hire group met a bloody end after he was killed with two of his men during a shootout with joint operatives of the Bulacan PNP’s Intelligence Branch, 303rd Criminal Investigation Group, Highway Patrol Group, Baliuag and San Rafael Police at their hideout in Barangay Piel in Baliuag, Bulacan on Wednesday morning. The two other slain suspects remain unidentified while no casualty on the police teams was reported. Police Regional Office 3 ( PRO3) director Chief Supt. Aaron Aquino identified the slain gang leader as Randy Lopez, leader of the group named after him that been involved in gun- for- hire, gun running and car theft activities in Bulacan, Metro Manila and other parts of Central Luzon. Aquino said the operatives were serving a search warrant when Lopez and his cohorts sensed the presence of the police team and opened fire prompting the lawmen to return fire. Supt. Marlon Santos, chief of the Bulacan Police’s Intelligence Office said Lopez has eluded lawmen for many years. Recovered from the crime scene were a caliber 45 pistol and two caliber 38 revolvers.
