Del Rosario, Acena share PPS Orchard honors

MARCUS DEL ROSARIO romped off with victories in singles and doubles while Bea Acena pulled off two singles wins and one doubles feat as the NCR bets dominated the Orchard leg of the Palawan Pawnshop- Palawan Express Pera Padala age group tennis tournament in Dasmariñas, Cavite on Monday.

Del Rosario went through some anxious moments in the semis, thwarting EJ Geluz, 6- 4, 6- 4, before trouncing Stefano Gurria, 6- 0, 6- 3, to claim the boys’ 16- and- under crown in the Group 2 tournament sponsored by Palawan Pawnshop and presented by Slazenger.

The Alabang ace later teamed up with Lorenz Quitara to crush Geluz and Gurria, 8- 2, and pocket the 18- U doubles plum at the Orchard Golf and Country Club tennis courts.

The third ranked Acena upended No. 2 Gabby Sandejas, 6- 1, 6- 3, in the semis then the Valle Verde Country Club bet overpowere­d sibling Renee Acena twice, 6- 2, 6- 2, in the girls’ 16- U finals, and 6- 1, 60, in the 18- U championsh­ip.

The Acenas later routed Elise Geluz and Denise Bernardo, 8- 0, to run away with the 18-U doubles title in the four- day event backed by Asiatrader­s Corp. and the new Unified tennis group, led by PPSPEPP, Cebuana Lhuillier, Wilson, Toby’s and B- Meg.

Other winners were Cavite’s Kean Enriquez, Samuel Nuguit from Las Piñas, Diego Dayrit and Gabriel Tiamson, both from Alabang, Melody Dizon from Sta. Rosa, Laguna and Elise Geluz from Imus, Cavite.

Enriquez swept Frank Dilao, 40, 4- 0, for the 10- unisex plum; Nuguit whipped JT Bernardo, 6- 1, 6- 2, for the boys’ 12- U crown; Dayrit blasted Joaquin De Leon, 6- 0, 6- 0, for the 14- U title; and Tiamson held off Gurria, 6- 3, 6- 0, for the 18- U diadem.

Dizon trampled Alecs Ilano, 62, 6- 2, for the girls’ 12- U title; Elise Geluz took the 14- U plum with a 6- 4, 6- 1 romp over Dizon; while Sophia Moreno and Ilano and Samuel and Shant Nuguit shared the 14- U doubles plums with similar 8- 5 victories over Dizon and Frances Moncato, and Joaquin de Leon and Kent Balazo, respective­ly.

Meanwhile, the Olivarez Cup, one of the premier events in the PPS- PEPP calendar, gets going Friday with the age- grouper with the centerpiec­e Open set to fire off August 10. For details call 0915404646­4.
