PH rowers bag 5 medals in Vietnam meet

THE national rowing team paddled its way to five medals – three silvers and two bronzes – in the 2017 Southeast Asian Senior and Junior Rowing Championsh­ips held at the Orchid Da Nang Beachfront in Da Nang, Vietnam.

Olympian Benjie Tolentino, the most veteran member of the team, led the Filipino paddlers’ campaign by earning the silver medal in the men’s single sculls of the tournament participat­ed by more than 100 athletes from seven countries.

Indonesia Sourtheast Asian Games gold medalist Nestor Cordova and Roque Abala also worked hand in hand in claiming the runner-up honors in the men’s double sculls while Melcah Jen Caballero and Joanie Delgaco secured another silver medal in the women’s double sculls.

Promising rower Cris Marasigan Nievarez contribute­d a bronze in the boys’ junior single sculls as well as Delgaco, who wound up third din the women’s single sculls of the event sanctioned by the Asian Rowing Federation.

Vietnam bagged the overall championsh­ip crown after earning 14 gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.

Indonesia settled for two gold, three silver and three bronze medals while Thailand got one gold, four silver and nine bronze medals
