Draw for Marikina, Davao in PFL

- JEREMIAH M. SEVILLA

JPV Marikina FC and Davao Aguilas FC battled to a 1-1 draw in their last encounter in the inaugural season of the Philippines Football League (PFL) on Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.

The Voltes struck the first goal in the first half while the Aguilas notched the equalizer in the second half as the two squads closed their respective campaigns in a stalemate.

Unable to get the maximum markers, JPV Marikina failed to surpass Stallion Laguna FC on the fifth place and finished behind instead with 32 points built on nine wins and five draws against 13 losses.

Davao Aguilas, meanwhile, wound up on the seventh spot of the eight-team table with 21 points on four victories and nine draws against 14 defeats.

It was the only standoff in four encounters between the two clubs.

Marikina escaped with a 3-2 win over Davao in their first meeting. The Davaoeños then bagged a 3-0 default victory in their second match before the Marikeños hacked out a 6-3 romp in their third tussle.

Raring to end its season behind the top four, JPV dictated the tempo right from the opening whistle and got rewarded when captain Takashi Odawara netted the opener just 12 minutes into the game.

Odawarda intercepted a pass near the halfway mark, ran into the penalty box to receive a through ball then put on a clinical finish to beat goalkeeper Marko Trkulja for the opening goal.

The Aguilas, however, spoiled the Voltes’ bid as midfielder Bradley McDonald volleyed home a lead pass to even the scoreline in the 57th minute.

That would be the final count with both squads failing to convert their scoring chances in the remaining minutes.
