QC NAMES SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL AFTER REVOLUTIONARY GENERAL
QUEZON City Mayor Herbert Bautista has approved an ordinance establishing a senior high school named after Vito L. Belarmino, a general in the Philippine revolutionary army during the Spanish and American occupations. The Vito L. Belarmino Senior High School will be located at Barangay Milagrosa, Project 4, according to City Ordinance 2652- 2018. The Local School Board of Quezon City, through Resolution No. 3, Series of 2017, recommended to name the senior high school after Belarmino. Proposed names of public schools “must have historical and cultural significance and must contribute to the positive development of national pride through the good example exhibited by the name being used,” according to the revised guidelines of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Born in Silang, Cavite, Gen. Vito L. Belarmino became one of the most brilliant major- generals and was involved in a number of attacks against the Spaniards. At age 19, he served in the government and held various positions such a teniente mayor, cabeza de barangay, secretary of the local tribunal and gobernadorcillo. He was also appointed as justice of the peace. Belarmino also fought in the Filipino- American War in Albay, and built his own guerrilla unit to fight the American colonizers in Bicol. He later became blind and was called “The Blind Veteran.” In honor of Belarmino’s legacy, the senior high school to be established in Barangay Milagrosa shall be named after him. To effectively implement the Senior High School Program where students will choose one among four tracks-- academics, arts and design, technical- vocational and sports-- Vito L. Belarmino Senior High School aims to initially offer the Sports Track.
