Filipino students bag 24 medals in Math Cup in China
YOUNG Filipino students won 24 medals–comprising of two gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze medals–in the 2018 Hua Luo Geng International Golden Cup Mathematics Competition held in Xiamen, China from August 10 to 14.
“We are the only international team outside China which bagged gold medals in the contest,” said Isidro Aguilar, president of the Mathematics Trainers Guild Philippines (MTG), an organization of experts founded in 1995, which trains students for international math competitions.
Winning gold medals are Grade 8 students Robert Frederik Uy of Philippine Science High SchoolWestern Visayas and Keean Nathaniel Tang of UNO High School who were also awarded additional bronze medals for ranking in the overall top 7th to 9th places.
The silver medalists are Iris Lexi Ababon, Kody Briones, Juan Rafael Landicho, Walsh Nico Adrian Letran, John David Magnaye, Cassidy Kyler Tan, Enzo Rafael Chan, Sean Matthew Tan, Chiara Bernadette Tan-Gatue, and David Kyle Picart.
Bagging bronze medals are Sophie Jill Co, Ian Gabriel Hong, Kristner Sheyn Saludo, Anika Gayle Tan, Kei Hang Derek Chan, Mayah Christine Lim, Alvann Walter Paredes Dy, Noel Stephen Dequito, Sigfred Kerwayne Kwan, and Andrei Lenard Chan.
The Golden Cup started in
1986, named in honor of famous Chinese mathematician Hua Luo Geng and is considered as one of
the toughest math competitions for primary and junior high school students in Mainland China.
