Sonny Bel­monte leaves pol­i­tics

FOR­MER House Speaker Feli­ciano “Sonny” Bel­monte Jr. has re­signed from the Lib­eral Party to re­tire from pol­i­tics.

He is on his third term as the con­gres­sional rep­re­sen­ta­tive of Que­zon City’s Fourth Dis­trict.

When asked if he had re­signed from the party and why, Bel­monte replied in a text mes­sage, “To re­tire from pol­i­tics at age 82.”

“Worked in var­i­ous ca­pac­i­ties for over 36 years. Ok­nayundb (That’s enough, isn’t it?) On and off since I was 26 or 27 years old,” he said.

Bel­monte served as a law­maker at the House of Rep­re­sen­ta­tives from 1992 to 2001.

From 2001, he was Que­zon City mayor. Bel­monte has been serv­ing as a House law­maker again since 2010.

He was House Speaker dur­ing the pres­i­dency of Benigno Aquino 3rd.
