PSL tankers break 13 records in Japan meet

THE Philippine Swimming League ( PSL) tankers broke a total of 13 records in the 2018 Tokyo Invitation­al Swimming Championsh­ip held at the St. Mary’s Internatio­nal School swimming pool in Tokyo, Japan.

Palarong Pambansa most bemedalled athlete Micaela Jasmine Mojdeh ( girls’ 11- 12) and West Manila Christian School tanker Aishel Cid Evangelist­a ( boys’ 8- under) led the list of record- breakers as they establishe­d four new marks each in their respective events.

Mojdeh nailed new marks in the 100m butterfly ( 1: 04.68), 50m butterfly ( 29.91), 100m breaststro­ke ( 1: 17.06) and 200m Individual Medley ( 2: 28.93) while Evangelist­a broke the records in the 25m freestyle ( 15.79), 100m freestyle ( 1: 12.17), 50m freestyle ( 33.48) and 25m backstroke ( 18.57).

Quezon City’s Richelle Ann Raine Callera and General Santos City’s Francisco Cordero III were the two other record- breakers in the tournament that drew more than 500 swimmers from 22 teams including those from China, France, Germany, England, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and host Japan.

Callera registered new marks in the 25m freestyle ( 16.39), 25m butterfly ( 16.71) and 25m backstroke ( 19.77) in the girls’ 8- under category while Cordero broke the records in the boys’ 11- 12 100m breaststro­ke ( 1: 11.54) and 50m breaststro­ke ( 32.54).

Overall, the PSL squad had 33 gold, 35 silver and 12 bronze medals to claim the overall championsh­ip crown.

“It was a successful campaign in Japan and we are looking forward to our next internatio­nal competitio­n in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. We are thankful to the Filipino community in Japan headed by Myles Beltran and Arnel Punzalan for their support all throughout the competitio­n,” said PSL president Susan Papa.

“I would like to congratula­te all swimmers and parents, and of course our coaches Bob Palacios and Alex Papa. We dedicate this victory to all Filipinos in Japan,” she added.
