Miss Earth candidates visit Albay, bat for healthier planet

LEGAZPI CITY: Miss Earth beauties called on the people and world leaders to work together for a healthier planet through plastics innovation.

Silvia Celeste Cortesi, 20, Miss Earth Philippine­s candidate, said it is possible to bring back a healthier planet through plastic recycling and by greening the denuded and coastal areas in the country.

Cortesi said the Miss Earth beauty pageant uses its platform to heighten public consciousn­ess and promote its advocacy of protecting the earth.

“I decided to join the Miss Earth because it is not just a beauty pageant. It is a different competitio­n that goes beyond beauty and brain because we have the power to share our advocacy and Miss Earth is our platform,” she said.

She added, “My advocacy is plastics innovation. I chose this because we know plastic is already everywhere. It’s really hard to say no to plastic nowadays but our challenge is to be innovative. We can recycle plastic in different way. These can be used for building roads, houses, making clothes and a lot of other things.”

Cortesi arrived in Legazpi City on Friday along with 29 other Miss Earth candidates and planted

their stay in this city.

Mangroves serve as a buffer between the ocean and the shore and protect the communitie­s living in the coastal towns and cities. It improves livelihood of the people as marine species can freely spawn. It is also shield against storm surge, big waves and tsunami, thus mitigating the impact of the rise of the sea level due to global warming.
