San Beda hints on rejoining PBA D-League
HEAD coach Boyet Fernandez said that San Beda University is planning to rejoin the 2019 Philippine Basketball Association Developmental League (PBA D-League) season.
“Yes, we plan to join the PBA D-League but we are still waiting for sponsorships. I hope we can find one,” Fernandez told TheManilaTimes in a text message.
San Beda, with Cignal HD as its partner, copped the Aspirants’ Cup in 2017. The Red Lions then opted to skip the 2018 season.
Cignal has hinted it may rejoin the league but Fernandez is not sure of another partnership with the brand.
“I really don’t know. It’s really up to the bosses what their plans are. For us, we’re just following them,” said Fernandez, a six-time D-League champion coach.
“Our goal really in joining the PBA D-League is to field the whole team and give everybody the experience so we can improve as a team in preparation for the next NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) season. Hopefully we can join,” he added.
San Beda recently won its third straight and an unprecedented 22nd overall NCAA crown under Fernandez.
University Athletics Association of the Philippines champion Ateneo De Manila University and runnerup University of the Philippines have both declared interest to join the developmental league.
A total of 22 school-based and corporate teams are girding up for action in the tourney, including founding member Centro Escolar University, Marinerong Pilipino, Go For Gold- College of St. Benilde and Wangs Basketball.
All squads have until December 21 to formalize their entry. The 2019 PBA D-League Draft is on January 24, with the competition proper unfolding on February 14 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
