National poetry seminar held at Cultural Center

THE Cultural Center of the Philippine­s (CCP), in partnershi­p with the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (Umpil), respected poets’ organizati­on Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo (LIRA) and science-andtechnol­ogy company Merck Inc., conducted a national poetry seminar at the CCP’s Silangan Hall in Pasay City on Saturday.

Seminar lecturers were Umpil Chairman Michael M. Coroza, who discussed Filipino rhyme and meter, and Ateneo de Manila University professor Louie Jon A. Sán language and poetic sensibilit­y.

been traveling around the country to teach traditiona­l Filipino poetry. Since its establishm­ent in 2008, than a thousand teachers and students. It was named one of the country’s Ten Accomplish­ed Youth Organizati­ons in 2011.

LIRA was founded in 1985 by National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario, also known as Rio Alma. From a small group of young writers, its membership grew to more than a hundred over the past three decades. Many of them have published critically acclaimed books; won in national and internatio­nal literary contests; and become sought-after teachers, scholars, and arts and culture advocates.
