Haribon members visit the birds of UP Diliman
THE Haribon Membership program recently conducted an urban birdwatching activity at the University of the Philippines Diliman in Quezon City to raise awareness on various urban birds and their habitats, and to promote the protection and conservation of the remaining green spaces in Metro Manila.
Led by Haribon biologist J. Kahlil Panopio, the foundation’s members were taught how to observe and identify different bird species found in the area and to practice their birding skills. According to the foundation, urban birding helps us understand that green spaces matter to provide urban birds with safe habitats.
Urban birds are a common group of birds that are plenty and easy to find. The maya can be frequently seen perched on roofs and window panes, the zebra dove on school grounds and parks, or the yellow-vented bulbul outside workplaces.
Unfortunately, they are also the most neglected group of birds, according to the Urban Habitats journal. Bird enthusiasts travel to popular birdwatching spots to see rare birds but the bountiful and precious birdlife outside our own doorsteps are often taken for granted.
“Ultimately, cities that are fit for birds are surely going to be fit for us as well. We monitor them to show us if our metropolis are healthy enough for all life,” said Haribon.
Despite the hustle and bustle of the city, Metro Manila is home to many urban bird species, and serves as a resting place for thousands of migratory birds. Haribon advocates on keeping common birds common through its Birds in the City campaign conducted year-round in UP Diliman and the La Mesa Ecopark.
