20,000 JOBS UP IN SUBIC CARAVAN

- WILLIAM DEPASUPIL

MORE than 20,000 job opportunities will be up for grabs for skilled jobseekers in a job caravan this Saturday at the Subic Bay Metropolitan Administration gymnasium in Subic, Zambales. The job fair was initiated to provide employment to thousands of displaced workers at the bankrupt Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction (HHIC) Philippines, but also open to job seekers in Central Luzon and nearby areas with skills in construction and related fields. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello 3rd on Friday said the labor department had already conducted a profiling activity on 2,779 Hanjin workers who were qualified in some job openings to avoid job-skill mismatch. “Around 65 percent or 1,801 of the 2,779 profiled Hanjin workers are skilled in carpentry, 24 percent or 661, on the other hand, have skills in vulcanizing and welding, hence there will be no problem with job-skill mismatch if they work in the construction industry,” Bello added.
