MSI Prestige PS63 Modern

- BY IRA JAMES

THE MSI Prestige PS63 Modern is a slim and stylish 15.6 laptop that is made for creators and working professionals. Our review unit was packed with a Core i7- central processing unit (CPU), Nvidia GTX 1650 Max-Q graphics, 16 gigabytes (GB) of random access memory (RAM), and 512GB nonvolatile memory express (NVME) solid state drive. With its current hardware configuration, this laptop was set to compete with other premium laptops for creative professionals.

Aesthetics

The MSI Prestige PS63 Modern was developed in collaboration with the Discovery Channel to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing. It’s sporting a matte dark grey finish on it’s aluminum body with blue accents on the edges. This aesthetic gives the laptop a premium look that really suits the professional office with a subtle MSI logo on the back.

Connectivity

Despite its slim form factor, the PS63 Modern has a lot of ports which in most cases, favors a lot of users because it gives the flexibility to connect standard peripherals, and more.

You can find two USB 3.1 Type A ports, as well as a microSD slot on the right side.

On the left, you have the power connector, and HDMI port, a USB Type- C port, another USB 3.1 port, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Unfortunately, you have to take note that the PS63 doesn’t have Thunderbolt 3.

Display

This laptop is rocking a 15.6 1080p IPS display that is capable of covering up to 100 percent sRGB color gamut. It is calibrated with MSI True Color Technology that allows for exceptional color accuracy and you can select different modes from sRGB, Designer, Office, Movie, anti-blue and gamer mode. Colors are vibrant and punchy, but we feel that the panel itself not as bright compared to other laptops like the MacBook Pro.

Keyboard, trackpad

The PS63 Modern’s backlit keyboard provides a comfortable typing experience with satisfying tactility and actuation despite it’s slim profile.

The trackpad on the other hand has a wide surface area and such a joy to use. It feels great and it utilizes Windows precision drivers and accurately responds to gestures like pinch-zoomand pinch-zoom and threefifinger threefinger swipes, among others. Wecan We can say that this is one of the best features of this laptop and is almost at par with the theMacBook MacBook Pro’s glass trackpad.

It also has a fingerprint scanner for authenticating with

Gaming, productivity performance

We brought this laptop on the road as one of our main work machine for our Computex 2019 coverage in Taipei last month and this laptop was able to help us get through our one week grind.

THE Core i7-8565U processor and 16GB of RAM can handle a lot of multitasking: lots of web browser tabs open, office productivity software and the occasional Spotify app in the background while working.

For storage, this laptop has the new WD SN520 512GB NVME SSD, which uses WD’s new in-house controller and 64-layer 3D NAND. It gives a snappy and responsive desktop experience, allowing for quick boot-up and application loading times. The WD SN520 has a sequential read of up to 1,700 megabytes per second (MB/s) and sequential write speed up to 1,400MB/s.

Performance on the occasional gaming session is pretty good as the GTX 1650 Max- Q was able to handle games at respectable graphical settings. Rainbow Six: Siege was able to give an average of 106.7 frames per second(FPS) (medium settings, 1080p) while AAA game titles like Monster Hunter: World gave an average of 49.8 FPS (medium settings, 1080p), while Strange Brigade had an average of 71 FPS (medium settings, 1080p, DX12).

On 3DMark Firestrike benchmark, the MSI Prestige PS63 Modern had a respectable benchmark score of 6727 points, reporting that it is 31 percent better than your average office computer in terms of gaming and rendering.

Adobe Premier users will find this hardware choice beneficial as they will be able to utilize Intel’s Quick Sync for fast rendering of video projects as well as the NVIDIA CUDA acceleration for GPU assisted processes in Premier.

Battery life was decent lasting around eight hours of working on-site during our tour at Computex.

Upgradability

This laptop has a very good upgrade path as it has two SODIMM slots that can accept up to 32GB of DDR4 memory and it has an extra M.2 SATA/PCIe combo slot that allows for installation of a higher capacity NVME solid state drive.

Conclusion

It is refreshing to see this MSI aesthetic aside from their usual gaming laptops. The aluminum body y and design g of the PS63 Modern feels premium and fits perfectly in a professional and creative office environment. Components packed inside the PS63 Modern means a lot of business. The Core i7-8565U has a max core boost of 4.6GHz, giving that much needed clock speeds for CPU-intensive applications. On the other hand, the NVIDIA GTX 1650 Max-Q is no slouch as it is based on the latest NVIDIA Turing architecture having the latest features, as well as a respectable GPU boost clock of 1245MHz, giving that extra processing power for GPU assisted workloads. Again, all these slim form factor. We would not hesitate to recommend this for creators and working professionals who is looking for a premium-built machine that not only looks great, but also performs really well as a daily computer.
