Reyes family wins SAFC Mabuhay Independence Rally

- BY MIKE POTENCIANO

THE favorite Reyes family dominated anew the third SAFC Mabuhay Independence TSD Rally recently staged from Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City to the home of the country’s independence, the Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite.

TSD stands for time, speed and distance.

Presented by the Provincial Government of Cavite through Gov. Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla, Mini Philippines and Petron Corp., patriarch Ray Reyes led his children Denise Ann Reyes Opinaldo, Paula Reyes and Justin Reyes to win the major awards of the MP Turbo-organized event for the third consecutive time.

The new title sponsor for the familyoriented, on-time, all-the-time rally was South Asialink Finance Corp. (SAFC), with major support coming from Mini Philippines, Petron, L’Entrecote Bistro, DB Café Molito, Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, ARR Media and Keon Sondra LED lights.

Passing through Manila’s historic independence spots, including the various heroes’ monuments in Makati, Roxas Boulevard and Rizal Park, the winning crew also took home the Family Division and the prestigious Team Award. They also got the new On Time Division for the lowest number of demerits in the timed sections of the rally and the Trivia Contest, which is unique to the SAFC-MP Turbo TSD rallies.

The second overall went to the enthusiastic Subic Racing Team of Jeff Soberon, Rommel Mateo and Jhian Paul Simpao Magrata. They battled their hectic schedule and lack of sleep to post an impressive second place, and got a well-deserved finish in the Mini Team during the STV Auto Rally Corporate Challenge.

The Novice Division was won by Ford Everest Club member Fred San Agustin, with wife Susan and kids Ahlric, Alfredo and Ahjur. After calculating both trivia and time demerits, they came out the best among the newbies, including fourth in the Family Division.

Coming in second in the Novice Class were the BCBP Team of Jun Melo, Jojo Bacarro, Jinggoy Bagabaldo and John La Madrid, who got to sort out their new team in the final stages and top the second stage of the rally.

The third place went to the new title sponsor SAFC Team of Joel Camantigue Cruz, Paul Mendoza, Cherry Ofielda and Andrea Guinto, who may have more cars from the company joining the next TSD rally.

For the Masters Division, the legendary Tuason family took first place. Led by former rally driver Raul Tuason, wife Jackie, daughter Adrea and newest member, two-year old Lucas. They also took home second place in the Family Division, right behind the winning Reyes family. The Tuason family also finished third overall in the standings.

The Masters Class’ second-placer was the BCBP Team of Melo and third-placer were BCBP teammate and DB Cafe owner Ting Garcia, Buddy Dimacali and Ed La Madrid. The Masters Class is open to any team with at least one senior member.

The new VIP Division for sponsors and special guests went to the racing family of Carlos and Iñigo Anton, with Inna Potenciano as navigator. They plan to bring the whole family next time after seeing the great family atmosphere of the TSD rally.

The second place went to the SAFC Team of Joel Cruz and the third to the BCBP DB Cafe of Garcia and his teammates.

The most coveted Team Award was taken by the Reyes family again, with the second going to the Tuason family and third to the Mark Young Racing Team composed of Mark Young, Mon and Raffy Dizon. The team award always goes to the top team that fields two to three cars.

The next two TSD legs would be announced soon, with MP Turbo conducting workshops to teach more people about the on- time, all-thetime rally format.

Based on the feedback of the participants, the format gets the entire family in one car to enjoy the different rally themes like the Third Independence Rally, and the past Heroes Day and Rizal Day events.
