The Filipinos are out to improve on their two gold, one silver, two bronze medal

Lumpur Games.

Monica Torres defied odds as she bucked an upset stomach to clinch the women’s duathlon crown in the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Monday at the Subic Bay Boardwalk here.

The Asian elite champion Torres finished the 10km run-40km bike-5km run in two hours, eight minutes, and 44 seconds.

“Seeing your fellow Filipino in the street supporting us motivates us to win the gold medal,” said Torres, who bared that she vomitted during the bike leg.

Torres, a three-time Powerman Asia Duathlon Champion, stressed she wasn’t pressured at all following the victories of the men’s team led by John Chicano and Kim Mangrobang.

‘ I didn’t feel any pressure after our triathletes won yesterday. We already expected them to win because they’re really strong in their events.

Torres was followed by silver medalist Pareeya Sonsem of Thailand, who clocked 2:11:18, while Thi Phuong Trinh Nguyen of Vietnam pocketed the bronze medal in 2:14:20.

Earlier, Joey Delos Reyes finished second with a time of 1:53:05 for the silver medal in the men’s side.

Jauhari Johan gave Indonesia its second gold after clocking one hour, 52 minutes, and 51 seconds.

“I am very happy because this is the first gold medal for Indonesia in duathlon,” said Jauhari, a double silver medalist in SEA Games 2011.

Thailand’s Nattawut Srinate settled for a bronze medal with 1:53:05 timing.

The run-bike-run event is returning to the SEA Games for the first time since the 2007 edition in Nakhon Ratchasima.
