PH men’s volley team to build on SEAG success
THE Philippine men’s national volleyball team vowed to build
30th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) on Tuesday night at the Philsports Arena.
Minutes into getting their
suffering a sweep to Indonesia in the gold medal match, head coach Dante Alinsunurin bared that Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. President Peter Cayco talked to him about the team’s continuous training for future tournaments.
“I had a conversation with Sir Peter. He said that our training will go on which is really what we wished for,” said Alinsunurin, who was appointed head coach last February.
“This is very important for us, especially now that we’re just starting. Obviously, we want to improve our game so we really need it. We will set it already in January and we will continue from there,” added the former national team standout.
The Filipino spikers’ inexperience was evident in their clash against the battle- tested Indofirst title in a decade.
Though the PH national training pool was formed just eight months ago, and the 14- man
Nationals managed to unseat four- time defending champion Thailand for an assured medal and a shot at the title.
That is why veteran middle blocker Rex Intal believes that a sustainable program will carry them to new heights of volleyball prowess.
“We’re hoping that the program will remain for us to get back at Indonesia. Just like what my teammates said, we just lack experience. Maybe in the previous SEA Games, Indonesia’s lineup is the same as now unlike us who got together just eight months ago,” he said.
who was only able to train again when the team went for an 11-day camp in Japan where he is playing as an import for a Japanese club, echoed Intal’s sentiment.
“We’re so happy that we made history here in the Philippine men’s volleyball team. But we’re hoping that the team will remain. Maybe we were just lacking experience. We hope that the support will still be there for us to be more successful,” said Bagunas.
