Misamis bans hogs from Davao

- BY CRIS DIAZ

MISAMIS ORIENTAL: Provincial Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano has declared a total ban on the entry of all hogs and swine products from Davao Occidental in the province of Misamis Oriental.

Provincial veterinarian Benjie Resma said Emano issued the order on Thursday after meeting with hog raisers and stakeholders in the region in response to reports about the presence of African swine fever ( ASF) in Davao Occidental provinces.

About 11,000 hogs were slaughtered in Davao Occidental after an outbreak of the ASF in the area,

Resma said.

He bared that the ASF had reportedly infected the swine industry in Davao Occidental since October 2019, but was detected only recently.

According to Resma, Misamis Oriental is still free of the ASF after it imposed a “no entry” policy of all swine products since the outbreak in Luzon last year.

“The provincial government of Misamis Oriental has adopted stringent measures to prevent the incursion of the ASF in the province to protect the hog raisers and the swine industry,” he added.

He said the provincial government has deployed a team in the boundaries of the province to prevent the hogs and swine products from entering Misamis Oriental, and to inspect swine farms for any presence of ASF.

The province of Misamis Oriental is the biggest supplier of hog products in the Visayas region following the ASF outbreak in Luzon last year, Resma said.
