- BY CATHERINE S. VALENTE

CEBU CITY, WHICH HAS BEEN CLASSIfiED as a coronavirus disease hotspot, will remain under enhanced community quarantine ( ECQ), President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Tuesday. In his address to the nation aired over state- run PTV- 4 late Tuesday night, Duterte said he had to extend the ECQ status in Cebu City until July 15 because of the increasing cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). “We know that the hospitals and everything there are having a hard time coping. Ang enhanced community quarantine — Cebu City, kayolang (Only Cebu City will be under enhanced community quarantine),” he said.

“Kamongmga Cebuano, ayaw mo’ gk asuk on ako.Akog at ra ba ho lang. Gina bad long ta mo ni ad to. Sub er bi yo mo eh. Di lit an an, di li tan an peron aagyudsa in yo( You Cebuanos, don’t get mad at me. I am just doing my job. I am calling your attention for being recalcitrant. Not all of you, but some of you are),” he added.

Duterte earlier placed Cebu and Talisay cities under ECQ and modified enhanced community quarantine from June 15 to 30.

But the community quarantine classification in Talisay City was downgraded to general community quarantine (GCQ) on June 22 following the high number of recoveries of Covid-19 patients.

The President also announced that Metro Manila, Benguet, Cavite, Rizal, Lapu- Lapu City, Mandaue City, Leyte, Ormoc and Southern Leyte would stay under GCQ until July 15.

He said GCQ would also be imposed in Talisay City, Minglanilla, and Consolacion in Cebu province.

Areas under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) were Abra, Baguio City, Ifugao, Kalinga, Ilocos Norte, La Union,

Pangasinan, Cagayan, Isabela, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Angeles City, Batangas, Laguna, Quezon province, Lucena City, Palawan, Puerto Princesa City, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Naga City.

Capiz, Iloilo City, Negros Occidental, Bacolod City, Cebu province, Bohol, Negros Oriental, Tacloban City, Western Samar, Zamboanga City, Zamboanga del Sur, Bukidnon, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro would also be under MGCQ, along with Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao

City, Davao de Oro, Cotabato, South Cotabato, Agusan del Norte, Butuan City, Lanao del Sur, and Maguindanao.

Duterte said Metro Manila residents complied with the government’s quarantine rules, thus, there was a “very good” chance that Covid- 19 cases would not spike.

“[Metro] Manila and the rest of the Greater Manila Area, there was a substantial compliance. I wouldn’t say that there was no violation. There were violations but not in a scale I saw in other places,” Duterte said.
