BoC hits monthly target amid challenges

- WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL

THE Bureau of Customs ( BoC) had again met its monthly revenue target following five months of successive below- par collection performance, according to the BoC- Financial Service.

In a report to Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero, the BoC Financial Service reported that the bureau was able to surpass its July 2020 collection target by 5 percent or P2.398 billion.

The BoC collected P50.072 billion against its target of P47.674 billion in July.

The bureau did it even as only 10 of the 17 collection districts exceeded their collection targets for the month. The Port of Aparri led the performers, followed by the Ports of Tacloban, Limay, Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Clark, Cebu, Batangas and Subic.

The non- performing collection districts were the Ninoy Aquino International Airport; the Ports of Iloilo, Surigao, San Fernando and Legaspi; and the Manila International Container Port.

Assistant Commissioner and concurrent spokesman Philip Vincent Maronilla on Wednesday attributed the above target revenue collection to the bureau’s sound policies and revenue generating measures.

He cited, among others, the improved valuation and volume of importation, coupled with the intensified collective effort of all ports and the government’s effort in ensuring unhampered movement of goods domestically and internationally amid the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Credit was also given to the collective effort of the bureau’s staff and employees, whom despite the risk to their health and safety, showed their unwavering commitment and dedication to service.

The Customs bureau has failed to meet its collection target during the first five months of the year, but surpassed its June 2020 collection target by 4.4 percent or P1.8 billion.

The BoC is the second biggest revenue generating agency of the government next to the Bureau of Internal Revenue.
