Filipino students dominate 2020 Asia Young Designer Awards
STUDENTS from the Philippines clinched the Gold and Silver Awards under the Architecture category at the 2020 Asia Young Designer Awards (AYDA).
Paul John Jandoc of the Univer- sity of Baguio and Napoleon Marion Clarke Mui of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) bested entries from 15 Asian countries this year in the annual design competition organized for architecture and interior design students by Nippon Paint
The Gold Award in Interior Design went to Maita Hagad of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. Silver went to Lauren Ghenrich Khoo, also of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde.
As informed by UST, Mui is a fourth year student of the UST College of Architecture and made his proposal for the community of Estero de la Reina in Manila, which had struggled with waste disposal and water pollution. He was mentored by architect Maria Lourdes Rigunay.
Known as the Estero Recycling Hub, Mui’s project uses community participation, innovation and the architecture to bring a positive impact to the residents of the area.
“The community-scale recycling center encourages a sustainable recycling system from the local garbage, which would then be a source of livelihood for the locals,” UST described the project.
This year’s theme was “Forward: Human-Centered Design,” which called for a “socially-driven space” in serving the needs of local communities with clear positive impact, especially for the booming population of Asian cities.
