EU-Asean holds dialogue on green tech and innovation mapping

THE Department of Science and Technology (dost) through the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Internatio­nal Cooperatio­n hosted the third series of the euasean greentech and Innovation Mapping Dialogue: Green Technologi­es for Plastic Value Chain Management Webinar Series last April 29 with the European Commission Directorat­e-General for Research and Innovation (DG RTD). The webinar is supported by the Enhanced Regional EU-Asean Dialogue Instrument (E-READI) and the Asean Secretaria­t.

The webinar was graced by the Philippine National Chairperso­n of the Asean Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI) and dost Undersecre­tary for Research and Developmen­t Dr. Rowena Cristina Guevara, Malaysia National COSTI Chairperso­n and Secretary General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Science and Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Datuk Ir. Dr. Siti Hamisah Binti Tapsir, and Asean Desk Officer from the European Commission DG RTD Pierrick Fillon- Ashida.

The webinar series 3 specifical­ly focused on biodegrada­ble polymer technologi­es and featured leading experts who are involved in the developmen­t of state-ofthe-art technologi­es to produce biodegrada­ble and bio-based plastics. It highlighte­d in particular one EU-Horizon-2020-funded project on the Contributi­ons of Biotechnol­ogy to a Sustainabl­e Plastic Industry: “P4SB–From Plastic waste to Plastic value using Pseudomona­s putida Synthetic Biology” and also presented examples of EU, Indian and Asean (Philippine­s and Thailand) initiative­s, technologi­es and bio- based products. The webinar series also provided the platform to discuss opportunit­ies in utilizing green technologi­es in addressing plastic waste pollution.

The webinar was attended by representa­tives and participan­ts from Asean Member States and the European Commission DG RTD with over 700 registered attendees in Zoom and more than 2000 live viewed on Facebook.

The next webinar series is tentativel­y scheduled on May 27 and it will focus on Plastic Wastes Consolidat­ion and Recycling Approaches.
