Matnog Port readies for transformation

-

THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) vowed to improve the users’ experience at the Port of Matnog, particularly on RoRo and other related services.

PPA General Manager Jay Santiago said the agency and the local government of Sorsogon were working to improve the operations in Matnog Port, after meeting with the local chief executives of Sorsogon, recently.

“We have created programs and projects that address the needs of the passengers and shippers. Our meeting with the Sorsogon LGU opened new doors for the passengers, traders, and tourists utilizing Matnog Port,” Santiago said.

Sorsogon Second District Rep. Manuel “Wowo” Fortes Jr., Gov. Jose Edwin “Boboy “Hamor, Vice Gov. Krunimar Antonio “Jun” Escudero 2nd, Provincial Administrator Eric Ravanilla and the members of the Provincial Board and Youth Council have collaborated with PPA to improve the busy port.

Matnog Port serves 2,500 to 3,000 average daily passenger volume, which reaches 10,000 during peak seasons like summer vacation.

Early this year, PPA issued a notice to the Joint Venture of Harbour Centre Port Holdings Inc and ZC Integrated Port Services Inc. to proceed with their work. The P1-billion contract for the Port of Matnog involves the management and operation of cargo handling, passenger terminal building and RoRo, as well as other related services.

Port Manager Ma. Magnolia Sinson-Requejo of the Port Management Office of Bicol said the one-stop shop (OSS) has been operational. As a result, complaints about the long queue outside the port significantly dwindled since the installation of the OSS. The booking and payment of fees have become faster and more efficient, resulting in faster turnaround time for vessels.
