Two sisters arrested over libel charges filed by mom

- FRANCIS EARL CUETO

THE Philippine National Police-Anti Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) said that two sisters were arrested in Lapu-Lapu City over charges of cyberlibel that were filed by their own mother.

PNP-ACG Director BGen. Joel Doria identified the suspects as Lyka Amoro Sumalinog, 27, and Gabrielle Amoro Sumalinog, 24.

According to the report, the two allegedly posted libelous statements against their own mother.

They were arrested by authorities from the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit (RACU 7) on Nov. 18, 2022, in Whitesands Villas, Maribago, Lapu-Lapu City.

The sisters were arrested by personnel from the RACU 7 led by LtCol. Richard Habawei in coordination with Lapu-Lapu Police Station 2 by virtue of a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Nelson Leyco, Regional Trial Court 7th Judicial Region, Branch 27, LapuLapu City.

A bail of P48,000 was recommended for each person. “Posting of libelous statements or commenting on photos whose purpose is to defame a person in social media is punishable under the law. ACG discourages anyone from doing so as these have repercussions,” Doria said.

It was not stated, though, what statements the sisters had posted that led to their mother filing charges against them and their eventual arrest.
